ANDERSON
cont. from p. 18
The media women, visible, but a minority, seem encumbered by their flawless hairstyles, and the layers of Revlon on their faces.
John Anderson talked about his candidacy, the egg-throwing incident, his. discussions last week with Edward Kennedy and -human rights. Human rights is an issue which is not popular with either candidate from the major parties. Anderson seems to think that the trend in modern world politics is toward "unscrupulous realism" in the failure of government to address the needs of human survival and dignity at the expense of economic and political expediency.
While gay rights issues did not surface at the press conference, Anderson has publicly stated support for them. After becoming a presidential candidate, he became a co-sponsor of the Federal Gay Rights Bill. Last week, he voted against the McDonald Amendment (see related story, this section) which would forbid the federally funded Legal Services Corporation from handling cases involving gay issues. He has strongly supported the Equal Rights Amendment and supports the right of women to have abortions.
The Governors are saying they don't think Anderson will take any significant number of votes in their states. Of course, more than having a commitment to their own political parties, most of the governors are heavily indebted to the two party system. The polls say Anderson is slightly ahead of Carter in popularity.
The election season before us is a turning point in American political history. Anderson readily admits. that American politics are dominated by single issue groups. Gays, of course, are among those groups. In the same way that Ronald Reagan is gaining support from the single-issue fundamentalist Christians and right wing conservatives, it seems that John Anderson is taking advantage of well-defined constituencies. Without any visible coordinating effort, it seems that gays are among those showing a natural inclination to the distinguished white-haired Congressman from Illinois.
By the way, Judy Wray, the Colorado Coordinator for the National Unity Campaign told Out Front she's looking for a liaison to work between the gay community and the Anderson campaign. You can meet Judy and find out more about this enigmatic candidate at their headquarters at 930 Logan.
